Concept Creation – De schijf van 5tig

De schijf van 5tig – a cook book for healthy, sustainable, and easy cooking.

For my minor in Graphic Design, I created a concept based on an urgent problem. As a problem, I chose the extinction of plant species. To tackle this problem, I designed a cookbook: De schijf van 5tig.

Our food system needs to change since it is not sustainable, our food goes extinct and the system is very harmfull for the ecosystem. However society demands a lot from our generation; eat healthy, live sustainable, have fun, work a lot, eat vegetarian and so on and on. In this pandemic time more and more people need to cook at home. That is why I created a book with recipes that are scientifically proven to be healthy, sustainable and vegetarian, in an easy and delicious way. In this way you can easily and quickly support the environmental quality and your own health by cooking delicious meals without losing time.

The concept

The 5 elements of the recipes:
• Healthy: Here in the Netherlands we use the Schijf van vijf to determine whether a product is healthy or not. All the used
ingredients fit in the Schijf van vijf.
• Sustainable: Knorr, WWF and Dr. Adam Drewnowski created a list of 50 ingredients which are nutritious and lower the impact
on our planet and support the agrobiodiversity. Every recipe contains at least 2 ingredients of the future 50 foods list.
• Vegetarian: The recipes are all vegetarian to lower the environmental impact and to show people that you don’t need meat to create a complete and satisfying meal.
• Easy: All the recipe have a maximum of 5 ingredients (except some basic elements that everyone has, or can easily have, at home). The recipes are easy to make with easy to follow and show how much time you need (maximum of 50 minutes including oven time). I also give alternative options for some ingredients when the accessibility is low.
• Delicious: The recipes contain a lot of flavor and can be adjust to taste. I often give tips how to expand the recipes with for example toppings or extra ingredients.

The end products

After research, I started creative sessions after which the idea for the cookbook came about. I worked this out in a draft version called The Disk of 5tig. For this I developed recipes, which I tested, improved and photographed. In addition, I created the entire text, illustrations and design. The entire development process is described in the concept guide.
